Antigonish looks at eliminating crosswalk

ANTIGONISH: A crosswalk in town is on the chopping block.

During last week’s meeting of Antigonish Town Council, members heard a recommendation from the traffic authority to remove the crosswalk in front of the former legion on Main Street.

Mayor Laurie Boucher said staff planned to discuss the matter to see if they are legally culpable as the crosswalk sign is there but the crosswalk lines haven’t been re-painted.

Some town councillors felt the crosswalk is needed in the area, describing it as one of the safest on the street.

“Different people have different views,” explained Boucher following the meeting. “Some people say you shouldn’t have a crosswalk in the middle of the street because you have one at each intersection there and that’s kind of redundant. Cars coming up to it are not expecting to stop. Other people are saying it’s well-used, well-lit, so there are contrary opinions for sure.”

Boucher said council will wait for a report from their engineering department before making a decision.
