Antigonish town staff get pension and benefits boost

ANTIGONISH: Town staff got a bit of a boost this week.

Following an in-camera session during a special meeting on June 24, Antigonish Town Council updated its staff benefits package and benefits plan.

Antigonish Mayor Laurie Boucher said town council approved an increase in the benefits package to reflect today’s economy and an increase in the pension plan from the current six per cent to seven per cent in 2021, and to eight per cent by 2022.

“We think that we’re being competitive with other municipalities and we value our employees and we want to be able to repay our good employees and recruit good employees,” said Boucher.

After looking at comparable municipalities, Boucher said they found most were in the same pension bracket.
