PORT HAWKESBURY: The Atom C Pirates hosted the top teams in their league last Saturday for the league championship.
Despite turning in a good effort, the Pirates were unable to get the Inverness Ravens number in the consolation championship. The final was 5-2.
Pirate coach Jason Aucoin said he credits the kids with having made some major strides from the start of the season (when losing 25-0 to the Antigonish Bulldogs) to now (coming a few bounces from taking bronze).
“I credit the kids and the assistant coaches I have with me,” he said, adding that the parents have been great to deal with. “When everyone buys in, that does a lot.”
In the consolation, Pirate Hayden Gill (from Gage Hawley and James Nixa) scored in the first frame to give the Strait a 1-0 lead.
The second period saw Colbin Hannig (once assisted and once helped by Owen Fraser) connect for a pair of goals, giving Inverness a 2-1 lead. Before the period was out, Pirate Austin Martell (from Ainslee Greencorn and Trent Short) dented the mesh to make it a 2-2 game.
The third period saw three goals come Inverness’ way, as Cody Clarke (unassisted) had the game winner at 44 seconds with a blueline slapper. Hannig (from Jack Timmons) completed a hattrick with 6:49 left on the clock, and Clarke (from Angus MacKay) had an empty netter with 52.1 seconds left.
Spencer MacLean was in net for Inverness, and Nate Sampson did the job for Strait-Richmond.
“It’s been a wonderful group of kids,” Aucoin said. “Everyone shows up at the rink happy, and that’s all you can ask for.”
Aucoin said the staff at the Civic Centre has been great during both the league championship and the Port Hawkesbury Paper tournament. The moms also did a great job of the hospitality suites, he said.
