BROOKFIELD: The Cape Breton West Female Pee Wee A Islanders pulled out the win in the Hockey Nova Scotia North Conference Championship game when facing the Antigonish Bulldogs on March 26.
The final was 5-4 and decided in double overtime.
Siena Beaton (unassisted) scored the go-ahead goal for Cape Breton West, with 1:37 left in the second OT frame. Beaton (from Shayna Heukshorst and Mae MacEachern) also had the Islanders’ first goal of the game early in the second period.
Antigonish nursed a 1-0 lead after the first period, due to the efforts of Bulldog Allison Gilfoy (from Jaelyn Rovers and Grace MacDougall).
The Islanders took a brief lead in the second, as Brooke MacLellan (from Ellie MacLean) scored with 10:24 left in the period. The Bulldogs managed a pair of second period goals following MacLellan’s effort, as Antigonishers Gilfoy (from Rovers and Hailey Richards) and Julia MacDonald (unassisted) put the puck in the net.
The Islanders scored twice more in the third period, giving them their second lead of the game. MacLean (from MacEachern) and Katie Agnes Aucoin (from MacLellan) popped two goals before Antigonish tied to force overtime.
MacDougall (from Rovers and Mairin Kennedy) had the Antigonish goal with 4:37 left in the third.
