ANTIGONISH: Theatre Antigonish is preparing to open its 43rd season with a groundbreaking comedy titled Cerulean Blue by Drew Hayden Taylor.

When a struggling blues band is invited to perform at a benefit concert for a remote First Nations community behind barricades, what follows is an uproarious exploration of politics, perceptions, and relationships. With a large ensemble cast, original music, and jokes that poke fun at everyone, this play is thoughtful, warm, funny, compassionate, and very entertaining.

The cast includes StFX students and staff, community members from Antigonish, and community members from Paq’tnkek Mi’kmaw Nation. The play is being directed by Theatre Antigonish artistic director Andrea Boyd, with musical direction by Jake Hanlon, and design by Ian Pygott.

Drew Hayden Taylor is an award-winning Canadian playwright. Raised on the Curve Lake First Nation in Ontario, his career as an artist has focused on educating the world about issues that reflect, celebrate, and interfere in the lives of Canada’s First Nations. He has written extensively about Native humour and is a two-time Governor General Award nominee.

The play is a specially commissioned Nova Scotian version of his work, and Taylor will be in attendance at the opening show on November 9 for a Q&A with the audience.

“I have been excited about doing this play ever since we first began discussing it with Drew Hayden Taylor last summer,” says Boyd. “Cerulean Blue epitomizes community theatre at its best – bringing together people, cultures, and communities through shared laughter. What better way is there to embrace our diversity and challenge our limits? We have an excellent cast and creative team and I can’t wait to share the product of their talents with our audiences soon.”

Cerulean Blue runs from November 9-11, and November 18-19 at the Bauer Theatre at StFX. There will be a pay-what-you-can preview show on November 8 and a matinee on November 18. All evening shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and the matinee starts at 2 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased on-line in advance at: www.theatreantigonish.com, or at the door starting two hours before show time. Season passes are also now on sale as a great way to subscribe and save for the whole year.
