SYDNEY: A local First Nations Chief is facing a charge of assault.

Assembly of First Nations regional chief Morley Googoo faces charges of assault and causing a disturbance. He is set to appear in Sydney Provincial Court on July 25, for a status report and again on July 31, for arraignment.

Googoo was charged in relation to an incident on June 17, when police responded to reports of a disturbance at the Hampton Inn in Membertou.

“As a result of the investigation, one male was charged, Wayne Morley Googoo, with assault and causing a disturbance,” said Cape Breton Regional Police spokesperson Desiree Vassello.

“He was released on a promise to appear in court on July 31.”

Googoo previously served as chief for Waycobah First Nation.
