Highland Football Club looks to welcome local players

PICTOU: Local soccer players interested in taking their game to the next level are invited to try out for AA and AAA level teams with the Highland Football Club.

“There are always a few kids who are higher end, competitive, and driven,” said Jen Bethell, communications coordinator for the Highland Football Club. “We want to make sure that [players from the Strait area] know we’re interested.”

The Highland Football Club draws from the clubs making up the Soccer Nova Scotia Highland District, including: the Colchester County Riders, the Antigonish Celtics, Pictou’s Northern Nova United, and the Strait Area Soccer Club.

Bethell said players from those groups, or highly athletic kids not currently playing soccer, are welcome to register with her club.

“The local clubs mostly offer A and B level play, mostly local, and the games stay generally in their own communities,” she said. “It’s generally not as competitive, and generally it runs in the summertime. The Highland Football Club offers the opportunity for kids to play at the AA or AAA levels.

“If you had a kid who wanted to play at a university level, this is the route you’d go. A lot of kids started out at the local clubs, and they decided they like the sport and decided to move up.”

The HFC fields girls and boys teams on the U-12, U-15, and U-17 levels. There is also a team on the U-12 level, but it’s generally smaller than the other three.

In the winter, club runs out of the Sobeys Indoor Sports Complex in Stellarton. In the summertime, teams practice and play at outdoor field in Antigonish, Pictou County, and Truro (granting players from Truro sign up).

Player tryouts/evaluation sessions will be held in both Antigonish and Pictou counties in April with training sessions to start immediately after evaluations. League play starts in May.
