PORT HOOD: Capturing the 2017 Telus Cup, not to mention the Atlantic Major Midget Championship and the top prize from the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League, and the banner at the 2017 East Coast Ice Jam, has resulted in the Cape Breton West Islanders being nominated for a very special award.
The team is one of three nominees for Sport Nova Scotia’s Support4Sport Team of Year. The Support4Sport Awards will take place on May 26 at the Halifax Convention Centre.
“The Support4Sport Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of athletes, coaches, officials, sponsors and volunteers from around the province – all of whom have contributed to sport in Nova Scotia,” reads a passage on the awards as taken from sportnovascotia.ca.
“These individuals represent the best of amateur sport, not only by virtue of their athletic achievement but also through their dedication and commitment to sport.”
The other two finalists are Team Kaitlin Jones (curling) and Team Georgia Lewin-LaFrance and Madeline Gillis (sailing).
Other big news out of the Islander camp relates to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and its central scouting list for June’s entry draft. Five Islanders were ranked by scouting.
They include Chase Ellis (third round), Neil MacLean (rounds 6 to 8) and Matthew Ellis, Ben MacLellan and Del Welton (rounds 9 to 14).
