PORT HAWKESBURY: The RCMP’s provincial Internet and Child Exploitation Unit will be hosting a presentation for students, parents and guardians, teachers, and the general public at the SAERC auditorium on Wednesday, September 20 at 6:30 p.m., just after “Meet the Teacher.” The presentation will be followed by a coffee time with questions and answers for the unit representative.
Constable Vicki Colford will report on the prevalence of child sexual exploitation in Nova Scotia, the legislation in Canada surrounding these crimes and the various crimes themselves, and the RCMP’s role in combating these crimes, with specific examples.
Most importantly, Constable Colford will present ways for children to be safer on-line and for parents to monitor their children’s’ on-line activities.
The Nova Scotia Community College Strait Area Campus will also be hosting a similar presentation at 11:45 a.m. on September 20 for their students, staff and faculty.
The presentation is a collaborative initiative by SAERC, NSCC, the RCMP, and the Strait Area Interagency for the Prevention of Family and Sexualized Violence.
Service providers from the interagency will be at SAERC that evening to promote the services and programs offered by the members of the agency to support families and individuals navigating these and other issues.
