IRON MINES: The winners of L’Arche Cape Breton’s NHL Hockey Package picked up their prize at The Ark store in Iron Mines early last week.

Derrick and Loretta Fox were the winners. The NHL Hockey Package includes airfare for two, hotel accommodations and tickets to see Montreal Canadiens play the Toronto Maple Leafs.

L’Arche Cape Breton is a community where 25 men and women with intellectual disabilities live and work with assistants who share their lives. They are part of an international federation of 149 L’Arche communities in 37 countries, including four in Nova Scotia, whose mission is to make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities. L’Arche communities strive to focus on what people can do, not what they can’t.

Through volunteer work and community donations over 33 years, L’Arche Cape Breton has grown to encompass six residences in three communities: Iron Mines, Orangedale, and Mabou.

The Department of Community Services supports core members’ basic needs for food, shelter, and supervision, but certain essential elements of community life do not receive provincial funding. These include an extensive work program and the community’s spiritual life.

The Ark Community Initiatives Society (the fundraising arm of L’Arche Cape Breton) raises funds to support a café and bakery, a craft studio, two used clothing stores, a workshop, a seasonal market garden and greenhouse, along with a summer program for young people with disabilities in Inverness County.

These valuable programs provide employment for all of all L’Arche members as well as numerous individuals with disabilities who live with their families or with other service providers.

L’Arche is grateful to the sponsors of the ticket draw package, and all the people who bought tickets over the last several months. They express sincere appreciation to everyone who helped to sell the tickets, especially East Coast Credit Union, and the members, volunteers, and board members of L’Arche Cape Breton. Proceeds from the ticket draw are in support of the Day Programs at the L’Arche community.
