Claire Hughena Marie (Walker) McDaniel – Port Hood As simply and humbly as she lived, Claire Hughena Marie (Walker) McDaniel felt her pain slip away as she was delivered into God’s hands.  A wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and sister, with her rosary in hand, and the Blessed Virgin in her prayers, Hughena said goodbye to the ones she loved.  In spite of her crosses, this lovely lady still found the energy and the time to carry on her duties in life with her family and friends first and foremost on her mind.  Those qualities and her soft nature she instilled in her children, Trevor, Tammy (Darren), Callum (Katie) and Mark.  A fifth child, Mary, just 17 days into this world awaits her in heaven.  Hughena was a dedicated employee of our school board, and over the years a much appreciated volunteer in her community in Port Hood “Dungarry” but her day was not complete unless filled with the presence of her wonderful grandchildren she cherished: Dylan (Jessica), Matthew, Georgia, Rowen, Carly, Hannah, Finley, Adilynn, Aiden and Vennah.  Native of Hay’s River, Hughena was the admired sister of Finlay (deceased), Dixie (deceased), John, Vincent and Mary.  Hughena, the youngest, born in 1949, became a resident of Port Hood when she married Colin, the love of her life.  That marriage of 47 years was strengthened by the love and care given by both spouses.  During Colin’s illness, Hughena was his rock, his love and his caretaker as in turn, he became hers as health issues came upon her.  On April 26th, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, her love of life and God would no longer be a part of this world.  To medical staff in Inverness and Sydney, especially her ICU nurse, Duncan, let it be known the McDaniel family will forever be indebted.  An angel of God now, you will always be Sweetheart, Mom and Gramma to us,.  Visitation was held at the Port Hood Resting Place on Monday, April 30th from 2-4 and 7-9 with funeral mass was held on Tuesday, May 1st at 11:00 a.m. from St. Peter’s Church, Port Hood with Father Vincent van Zutphen officiating.   Burial to follow in St. Peter’s cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to the St. Peter’s Parish Cemetery Fund, Port Hood. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.
