Midget Girls to host province’s best

PORT HOOD: The Midget Girls Quad Counties Islanders will host some of the best female hockey players in the province on the weekend of March 29.

“At the start of the season, this was one of our goals,” said coach Darren MacDonald. “It became possible for us to host, so we thought we might as well see what we can do.

“We have a great venue. It’s a great arena to play out of. It’s lively, and the style of play in a rink like that is very exciting.”

The girls finished third place in their five-team provincial league, going 8-9-7 (win-loss-tie). The competitive nature of the league will make for a good weekend of hockey, MacDonald said.

“We got off to a great start, slackened off a little bit, and then we came on a little at the end,” MacDonald said. “We finished near the middle of the pack in our league, but our losses were mostly by a goal.

“Whoever wants it more, I think, will come out on top.”

Bringing a serious work ethic to the ice, the coach said, will be mission number one for the local girls.

“We’ve got some skill, and we’re a very hard working team,” he said. “Any team I’m involved with, that’s number one. The work boots on and hard hats on, and we’re ready to go.”
