MULGRAVE: Town council is once again looking to round out its numbers.

Last week, Mulgrave Town Council set aside June 3 as the date for a by-election to fill the lone empty seat on council.

“We’ll start advertising in the next couple of weeks and nomination deadline day is May 9,” Mulgrave CAO Kevin Matheson said.

Back in December, Mulgrave Mayor Ralph Hadley said the Department of Municipal Affairs was told by town council that a by-election will prove too costly for taxpayers. Hadley also pointed to the fact council did not receive any nomination papers from prospective candidates looking to fill the one remaining seat at the council table during the last call for nominees.

However, with the municipality having since withdrawn its application to dissolve town status, council is hoping a more long-term position will help attract interested candidates.

“There have been some individuals who expressed some interest,” said Matheson. “We’re hoping one or more of them will actually file papers.”

Matheson said council was looking to meet with Municipal Affairs Minister Zach Churchill on April 11 to discuss options for the town.

“We’re still fine-tuning that, trying to make it fit in everyone’s schedule,” Matheson added.
