GUYSBOROUGH: Council is looking to learn more about rocket launches and they are sending representatives south to fact find for them.

Last week, council for the Municipality of the District of Guysborough voted to send Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Barry Carroll and economic development officer Gordon MacDonald to Vandeberg Air Force Base in California to witness a United Paradyne Corporation rocket launch. United Paradyne Corporation provided initial funding for Maritime Launch Services, a company looking to set up a rocket launch site near Canso and Hazel Hill.

Guysborough Warden Vernon Pitts said Carroll and MacDonald will attend the launch as a means of gathering information.

“I don’t think it’s the right time to send a member of council,” said Pitts. “We’re not going to be dealing with the proponents. Any dealings we have… will be at the council table by way of a motion. It’s Barry, as the CAO, and Gordon, as development officer, that’s who’s going to be hands-on with these people.”

Pitts said he thinks council shouldn’t ask Carroll or MacDonald to do a job without first providing them with the proper tools, one of which is information.

“When someone asks how are they launched, what kind of noise is there, how are their employees, what do they have for infrastructure,” said Pitts, noting MacDonald and Carroll will have a frame of reference to answer such questions following the visit. “As councillor Janet Peitzsche said, when he gets back, she wants a full report and I expect a report too.”
