ANTIGONISH: A provincial party leader wants to see Nova Scotians make a progressive decision in the next election.
Nova Scotia NDP leader Gary Burrill was in Antigonish on October 27, after receiving an invite from the StFX Young New Democrats. Burrill offered a talk, entitled “Austerity or Investment: Two Roads for Nova Scotia.”
During his talk, Burrill said the province faces a choice of either sticking with the status-quo in the form of the current government, or moving toward a time of investment, particularly social investment.
“Primarily, the austerity view says the road forward is to cut back so that expenditures will be so limited that you’ll be able to balance the books,” he said. “Whereas the investment view says that what we need government to do is actually to stimulate the economy and make investments in widening opportunities for people and providing people with better health care and communities, much in the way we see the federal government is doing, for instance.”
Burrill said the NDP is the only provincial party touting the investment option.
“We have in Nova Scotia what we need in order to have a province where nobody has to go to food banks and a province where everybody who wishes to pursue post-secondary education is able to do it and not discouraged from it because they might have a lack of funds,” he said.
“These things are actually accomplishable but it requires a government that takes an active role in investing in the lives and futures of people.”
Burrill also mentioned the situation with Nova Scotia teachers, who voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike. He said the provincial government is single-minded in pursuing cutbacks, noting a two-year wage freeze for teachers is integral to the government’s “whole enterprise” of balancing the budget.
“They have not figured out what the rest of the world has figured out; that things don’t add up when all you do is take away,” he added.
