STRAIT AREA: Strait-Richmond Minor Hockey is hosting the 38th annual Port Hawkesbury Paper Minor Hockey Tournament, and action resumes this weekend.
The tournament started in February during the weekend of February 17-19 with the IP and Novice divisions (4 to 8-year-olds) playing at both the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre and Richmond Arena. In total, 30 teams from across the province participated that weekend with teams from as far away as Cheticamp, Canso, Pictou, Halifax, Bedford, Sackville and Cole Harbour (just to name a few) taking part.
The tournament continues over March Break (March 10–18) with all divisions from Atom (9-10), PeeWee (11-12), Bantam (13-14) and Midget (15-17) levels taking part. Forty more teams from across the province (from Sydney to Western Valley) will travel to the area to participate in what should be an action-packed week of hockey.
The tournament concludes on the weekend of March 23–25 with the Atom AA division closing out the tournament.
In total, 70 teams and approximately 1200 players are taking part in this year’s tournament.
Opening ceremonies will be held at noon on Saturday, March 10 at the Civic Centre.
A tournament of this size would not be possible without the hard work of volunteers serving on the tournament committee, division coordinators, hospitality coordinators, parents, players and coaches.
Strait-Richmond Minor Hockey would like to thank corporate sponsors: Port Hawkesbury Paper (main sponsor), Town of Port Hawkesbury, County of Richmond, and Tim Hortons for their continued support of this tournament each year.
