LOUISDALE: The Strait-Richmond Atom AA Pirates hosted its division of the Port Hawkesbury Paper Tournament on the weekend of March 24-25.
The Cape Breton West Islanders Atom AA won the gold medal in the championship game over Western Valley Spartans 6-0. Ben MacDonald of the Islanders was named tournament MVP.
The Pirates captured bronze in the consolation game against the Amherst Fire Department AA Ramblers with a score of 4-1.
The Pirates did not have a winning record this season, winning only one game in league play along with three ties. They did however compete well and showed great improvement throughout the year. The Pirates narrowly missed making crossovers at their league Cape Breton Cup losing a heartbreaker to rival Sydney Steelers 5-4 with only seconds left in the third.
The weekend of hockey topped off the annual tournament, which Leon Burt, tournament organizer and vice-president of Strait-Richmond Minor Hockey, says was a great event once again.
“It was a great week of hockey,” he said.
“Unfortunately, Strait-Richmond did not come away with a banner, but receive two bronze medals in the Bantam A and Atom AA divisions.”
The tournament had eight divisions and close to 80 games played at both the Richmond Arena and the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.
“We would like to thank all our volunteers, the hospitality coordinators and our team coordinators for all their time and hard work,” Burt said. “We received so many compliments on how organized everything was and the great hospitality that was provided for all teams.”
Burt also tipped his hat to the rink attendance at both rinks; major sponsor Port Hawkesbury Paper; the Town of Port Hawkesbury and the County of Richmond, for a $2000 donation each; Tim Hortons and McDonalds, for their donation of coffee all week; and Gerard MacNeil, for organizing the officials for all the games.
