Remembering Kenzie

The seventh annual Kenzie Beaton Memorial Hockey Tournament took place just days before Christmas at the Mabou Athletic Centre, and the event wasn’t without some hockey elite including Declan Smith and Jessica Wong. Smith is a former Cape Breton West Islander now serving as captain of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, and Wong is a standout in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. Local elites were also taking part in the opening faceoff including Kenzie’s parents, A.J. and Debbie, along with a number of younger family members.

In the Lobster Division, Cruising Along dropped The Chiefs 5-4 in overtime. In Crab Division, the Pooh Bears took down the Mighty Dekes 4-3, once again in overtime. In the Tuna Division, Chuckies Canucks won a tough battle against Zutphens 4-3 in overtime.

The event saw an opening ceremonies including the Beaton family, Kenzie’s parents A.J. and Debbie, and hockey stars Declan Smith and Jessica Wong. Seventeen teams took place, and two music events took place including a pub night with Andre Pettipas and a dance with Eddie Cummings.
