Samson to fill in as deputy premier, attorney general

HALIFAX: A Strait area MLA now has a few more cabinet files to add to his already long list.

Last week, Premier Stephen McNeil selected Cape Breton-Richmond MLA Michel Samson to fill in for Dina Whalen, who took what was described as a brief medical leave after being hospitalized on December 5.

“We wish Diana well and hope she makes a speedy recovery,” stated the premier in a release.

“She is a valuable member of the team and we are looking forward to having her back as soon as possible.”

Samson is already the Minister of Energy, Minister of Trade, Minister of Acadian Affairs, Minister for Part 1 of the Gaming Control Act, serves as the House Leader, and sits on Treasury and Policy boards.

For the time being, Samson will take over Whalen’s duties as justice minister and attorney general, and deputy premier.
When asked how he’ll manage the extra work, Samson said his position only temporary.

“It’s not my first time having the premier ask me to take on additional responsibilities,” he said. “Obviously our thoughts are with Minister Whalen for a speedy recovery. I’m happy to do my part to cover her duties while she is recovering and getting back to full health.

Samson was first elected to the House of Assembly in 1998. He previously served as Interim Leader of the Liberal Party from 2006-2007 and served as Minister of Communications Nova Scotia, Minister of the Environment and the Minister responsible for the Youth Secretariat Act.
