PORT HAWKESBURY: The Junior Pirates endured a shutout loss on Friday night and celebrated a shutout victory on Sunday in Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League (NSJHL) play.
The league-leading Glace Bay Miners visited the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre on Friday and managed a 4-0 win over the host Junior Pirates.
Goalie Mike O’Reilly faced 40 shots in his first outing for the maroon and white. He allowed two in the final 20 minutes and a single goal in each previous period. Highlights included Pirate Duncan MacInnis throwing some knuckles with Miner Brendon MacLean in the middle frame.
On Sunday, Matthew Stymest was impressive in the Pirate net as he stopped 38 Cumberland County Blue shots. The final was 6-0 for the maroon and white.
Floyd MacDonald (a goal and two assists) and Morgan Timmons (a goal and an assist) both scored for the Strait in the first frame. In the second, Kirkland Bernard (a goal and two assists), Cody Hinkley (a goal and two assists), and Randon MacKinnon (two goals) all connected, making it a 5-0 hockey game. MacKinnon also put the puck in the net in the final 20 minutes. Axel Poirier had a helper on the Hinkley goal.
This Friday, the Pirates (who have three wins in five games, with one win coming via shootout) will play host to the East Hants Penguins (2-1). The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
