PORT HAWKESBURY: The Tamarac Education Centre boys basketball team won the JARIS banner for the 2017/2018 school year.

The JARIS Banner (Junior Athletics, Richmond, Inverness Schools) is awarded for the junior high school basketball championship in Richmond and Inverness counties. The championship tournament, held this year at TEC, saw Bayview Education Centre defeat Richmond Academy in one semi-final while TEC defeated Cape Breton Highlands in the second.

The championship game between Bayview and TEC was a competitive one with TEC prevailing. Remarkably, this is the seventh banner for TEC in the last eight years of play.

There was no basketball program at any of the schools last year, and this resulted in a noticeable lack of experience on most of the school teams. TEC was fortunate to have a basketball program outside of the school for boys primarily in grade six and seven.

This resulted in a good supply of players to the extent that TEC carried a larger number of players than usual on the school team and gave them the opportunity to play.

Coaches Shawn Whitty, Corey England and David Johnston were very proud of the boys, especially their development in basketball fundamentals over the season.

All players contributed to the championship win with the grade eight boys holding their own even though they missed playing last year. The grade seven players are well prepared to step up next year.
