ANTIGONISH: County and Town Councils looked into their stipends following changes to federal tax rules.

Previously, one-third of the stipend for municipal representatives was not taxable. As of January 1, the entire stipend is taxable.

In December, Antigonish Mayor Laurie Boucher and Antigonish Warden Owen McCarron said councils would look at adjusting their stipends.

“Probably what will happen is we will increase it enough so that it will make up for the losses in the taxes,” said Boucher.

“It will not be an increase to our take home. It will be equal to what we’re taking home now.”

McCarron also said the county will adjust the stipends so there is no net difference to councillors.
