PORT HAWKESBURY: The SAERC Saints high school hockey team scored a 6-0 win over the Richmond Hurricane last Wednesday night at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.
“I thought it was a good effort on our part,” said Saint bench boss Stan MacNeil. “We have a mature team, and a group that’s been together in minor hockey for a number of years. They’re used to the systems we play, they’re familiar with their linemates, and they’re familiar with the coaches.
“It’s important to get off to a good start, and I think we’re going to test ourselves with some of the better teams at Division I tournaments this year.”
Connecting for the Saints were Brady White and Harrison MacFadyen, both of whom had a pair of goals. Brady MacNeil and Michael Mac Lean also scored for SAERC. Chase MacPherson had the shutout.
Richmond fought hard and, last season, the Hurricane were the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League champions. However, with several key players having graduated, the Hurricane found it tough to generate the offense needed to hang with SAERC.
“They [The Hurricane] still have some great players, but they lost some great players,” said MacNeil.
On November 2, SAERC skated to another shut-out, this time 7-0 over Inverness/Baddeck.
For the Saints, White had a hat trick, and with one goal each were Brady MacNeil, Ben Madden, Andre Gerroir, and Brett MacNeil.
