The Port Hood Community Park will be designed with the community – and especially youth – in mind, as a hub of activity, connection, and fun.

PORT HOOD: Residents of the Municipality of the County of Inverness are invited to participate in a public engagement session on June 3 to help shape the design of a new community park in Port Hood.

The proposed park will be situated at the corner of Main Street and Wharf Road, on the former site of Port Hood Consolidated School. Design consultants from Glenn Group Landscape Architects and Park Planners will present preliminary concepts for the park during the session, which will be held from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Parish Hall in Port Hood.

The design concepts are informed by a range of community feedback collected to date, including responses from a recent online survey.

“This is a chance for residents to view the initial plans and provide additional ideas or comments to help shape the next phase of the design,” stated a release issued by the municipality on May 20.

The land for the park has been generously donated by local residents Ted and Hermina vanZutphen. The project is being guided by a planning committee composed of community members, with support from municipal staff.

The committee is tasked with overseeing all stages of the park’s development, which will unfold in three distinct phases.

Currently in its conceptual design phase, the project involves site survey work, the formation of the planning committee, initial consultation meetings, and the upcoming public engagement session. The municipality anticipates this phase will be completed by early June 2025.

The second phase – detailed design – will incorporate community feedback gathered during the initial stage, as well as assessments of the site and equipment. During this phase, construction documents will be prepared, and consultations with the planning committee will continue. Completion is projected for late summer 2025.

The final phase will involve construction of the park, including the tendering process, site inspections, and contract management. Further details will be shared by the municipality as the project advances.

“The Port Hood Community Park will be designed with the community – and especially youth – in mind, as a hub of activity, connection, and fun.”
