Delay at Causeway due to operational test

PORT HASTINGS: Traffic was backed up at the Canso Causeway last Friday, and the reason for the delay left locals wondering what exactly was the issue.

“Sometimes when people are kept waiting, there are questions being asked,” said Andrew MacPherson, Project Engineer from the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal.

MacPherson said he had gotten word out about the closure – which was planned — as well as he could. His department releases a notice by radio saying the bridge would be closed for operational tests on Friday. The notice was released before the closure.

“There was no malfunction or anything,” he said. “We just do a few little tests now and then to make sure we know what’s going on at all times. We do upgrades for testing every now and then.

“I know there were some delays on Friday because the boat and marine traffic was heavy,” he added. “They team up, and traffic gets backed up. We just had two operational tests in the morning, and that was it.”
