The panic is on.

For many of us, the realization is setting in that summer has somehow disappeared. We are looking at the calendar, wondering where the weeks went, trying to squeeze in those last few summer adventures and, perhaps, quietly wishing we could slow things down just a little.

But while some are still holding tightly to summer, others are already in full back-to-school mode.

It won’t be long before our social media feeds are flooded with those familiar photographs: children standing proudly with brand-new backpacks, sparkling sneakers and perhaps a little uncertainty in their eyes. There will be smiles, excitement and, inevitably, a few tears. There will be first-day pictures, bus-stop pictures, classroom pictures and proud parents documenting another milestone in their children’s lives.

I may as well get my complaint out now.

Along with those wonderful pictures, there will undoubtedly be the negative comments. The complaints about people posting too many back-to-school photos. The predictable whining. The people who seem determined to find something to criticize, even when the moment being celebrated has absolutely nothing to do with them.

There will always be people who thrive on negativity and disruption – people who seem happiest when everyone else is unhappy. Some will complain simply because they can. Others will turn an innocent celebration into an opportunity for drama.

So, before that happens, I have a simple request:

Can we just let people be happy for one day?

Fill my social media feed with those pictures.

Show me the little ones taking their first steps onto that big yellow school bus. Show me the proud smiles, the nervous faces and the children who are absolutely bursting with excitement. Show me the older students reconnecting with friends they haven’t seen all summer. Show me the new friendships waiting to happen, the adventures about to begin and the possibilities that come with another school year.

Show me the shiny backpacks and sparkling sneakers. Show me the parents trying not to cry as they wave goodbye. Show me the excitement of children heading toward something new and unknown.

I have raised children through the education system. I know there are challenges. I know there are frustrations. I know the school year will bring difficult days, difficult decisions and moments that test the patience of students, parents, teachers and administrators alike.

But today is not that day.

Today is about celebrating a milestone.

For one day, can we put the complaints aside? Can we resist the urge to turn every happy moment into an argument? Can we simply celebrate our children and the incredible journey they are beginning once again?

These students are our future. They deserve our encouragement, our pride and our very best wishes as they walk through those school doors.

So, bring on the first-day pictures. Fill the feeds with positivity. Let’s celebrate the excitement, the nervousness, the laughter and even the tears.

To every student heading back to school: good luck, have fun, make friends, learn something new and make memories you’ll carry for years to come.

And to every parent: take the picture. Be proud. Soak in the moment.

Here’s to a safe, successful and wonderful school year for everyone.
