MABOU: The seventh annual Kenzie Beaton Memorial Hockey Tournament took place just before Christmas at the Mabou Athletic Centre.
In the Lobster Division, Cruising Along dropped The Chiefs 5-4 in overtime. In Crab Division, the Pooh Bears took down the Mighty Dekes 4-3, once again in overtime. In the Tuna Division, Chuckies Canucks won a tough battle against Zutphens 4-3 in overtime.
The event saw an opening ceremonies including the Beaton family, Kenzie’s parents A.J. and Debbie, and hockey stars Declan Smith and Jessica Wong. Smith is a former Cape Breton West Islander now serving as captain of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, and Wong is a standout in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League.
Seventeen teams took place, and two music events took place including a pub night with Andre Pettipas and a dance with Eddie Cummings.
