Will Whedon save it or repeat himself?

Please don’t do it sir.

Friends, I come to you with a dilemma. Sure, it’s not of the “what will I do for the rest of my life” type or even the “what will I have for lunch type.” It’s more the “why am I even wasting my time think about this sort of thing type” but still… it’s a dilemma.

You may have read about my affinity for writer-director Joss Whedon in previous columns. He’s the man behind Buffy The Vampire Slayer (wrote the movie and was show runner for the TV show), Firefly (RIP), The Avengers movies and other rather nifty things. Basically, the man is to nerds what Neil deGrasse Tyson is to nerds who don’t watch TV.

Anyway, reports have Whedon in talks to write and direct a Batgirl movie for Warner Brothers and I am confused as to whether this is something to be celebrated or condemned.

One on hand, I don’t care for DC’s current generation of movies. At best, they are tolerable. Sure Whedon might class up the joint when it comes to DC but it also might lead to him making a movie where he doesn’t have complete control. Personally, I think DC is only speaking with Whedon in order to land themselves points with the geeks who are sick of what DC has to offer. Whedon also previously said he was done with the Marvel cinematic universe after Avengers: Age of Ultron. Whedon said he stepped away because he was concerned about repeating himself, and while I won’t argue with the guy who created Firefly, I would suggest he is putting himself in the same position now by taking on a different comic book property.

One the other hand, I like to see Whedon working. I have enjoyed everything he was in charge of for the last couple of decades (Buffy began 20 years ago folks.. . yep, I am old) so this could be another solid project for him. Plus, it might inject a little life into the DC side of the superhero movie spectrum, possibly leading to an overhaul of the entire DC stable and me possibly liking Batman, and rest once again.

Plus, Batgirl is, naturally, a female hero and those have been in short supply when it comes to the movies. (DC is the first out of the gate with Wonder Woman coming out later this year. Marvel is inching toward Captain Marvel, set for 2019.) With Whedon, you get a writer who creates real female characters and not just window dressing for the male heroes. I think he would be great as the backer of a female character’s film, regardless of whether it belongs to Marvel or DC. Plus with Batgirl, there is more room for an interesting film, and not just a wham-bam action movie. The man is responsible for the best years of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I think he can handle one movie about a regular Jane who likes to dress up and apprehend criminals.

In conclusion, I am leaning towards him making the Batgirl movie. I like Whedon’s work too much to let the stink of DC’s other properties ruin it for me. If the movie happens, it will be good and likely the best thing DC put out since The Dark Knight. If it comes out and it is terrible, there truly is no saving DC from itself and I will avoid all its properties in perpetuity… or at least until their next movie comes out because I am a nerd who will watch pretty much anything involving superheroes. I am so lame.

I’m done now.
