HALIFAX: Five winners were awarded Efficiency Nova Scotia’s Bright Business awards last week.

The Municipality of the District of Guysborough (MODG) took home the Community Award. The Community Award recognizes a Nova Scotia community that has excelled in energy efficiency campaigns or projects.

The municipality has completed a number of different green initiatives, including major energy upgrades and retrofits throughout the area.

“We’ve had energy retrofits completed in all of our municipal buildings, from Guysborough to Canso,” says Vernon Pitts, MODG Warden.

“We’re also the first in the province to own and operate a large scale wind farm.”

Investments in renewables and energy efficiency has helped Guysborough emerge as an environmental leader in Nova Scotia. The municipality is also partnering with Efficiency Nova Scotia on the Property Assessed Clean Energy program (PACE), bringing low-interest loans to homeowners looking to make their home more energy efficient.

“The Municipality of the District of Guysborough has set emission targets and is committed to reducing emissions throughout their community,” says Monica MacLean, spokesperson for Efficiency Nova Scotia.

“They’ve found great success in pairing renewable targets with energy efficiency.”

The Bright Business Awards is now in its fifth year and recognizes organizations and individuals in Nova Scotia for their achievements and leadership in the field of energy efficiency.

Award winners were announced during the fifth annual Bright Business Conference at the World

Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax on October 19. Speakers included the President and CEO of the Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance, Elizabeth McDonald, and Nova Scotia’s Energy Minister, Michel Samson.

Efficiency Nova Scotia is operated by EfficiencyOne, an independent, non-profit organization based in Dartmouth. Since 2010, it has helped more than 225,000 program participants save energy and money. Efficiency Nova Scotia is the go-to place for energy saving programs and services.
