SAMPSONVILLE: A milestone as rare as it is remarkable, the 100th birthday of Mrs. Marjorie MacKenzie-MacKay brought festive cheer and heartfelt gratitude to the Lakeside Community Centre.
In a day filled with music, memories, and meaningful gestures, Marjorie’s legacy as a beloved matriarch, mentor, and community cornerstone was celebrated by a crowd of family, friends, and admirers on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024.
The centre was alive with warm greetings and well-wishes as guests filed in to meet the guest of honour. Marjorie’s unwavering spirit shone as she chatted with former school colleagues, students, neighbours, and an extended family that spanned generations. The gathering was not only a tribute to Marjorie’s century of life but also a testament to the impact she’s had on her community.
In keeping with Marjorie’s generous nature, attendees marked the occasion by contributing to causes close to her heart. Donations surpassed $1,800, with over $1,000 directed to the Lakeside Community Hall organization and more than $800 benefiting the St. Peter’s and Area Foodbank.
The MacKenzie-MacKay family expressed profound gratitude for these contributions, which underscored the spirit of giving that Marjorie embodies.
Adding a personal and poignant touch to the celebration, Marjorie’s grandson, Matt MacIsaac, composed a 6/8 March titled “Marjorie MacKenzie-MacKay.” The new pipe tune debuted with a stirring performance by five of Marjorie’s family pipers, accompanied by two additional pipe band sets. The music filled the hall, resonating with the pride and admiration felt by all in attendance.
Tributes poured in from far and wide.
Marjorie received official certificates from The Pope, the Prime Minister of Canada, the Premier of Nova Scotia, the MLA for Richmond and the council of the Municipality of Richmond County, each recognizing her remarkable milestone.
A touching floral presentation and tribute were delivered by retired teacher Phyllis Côté, who reflected on her long-time friendship with Marjorie and her enduring influence as a mentor. On behalf of the retired teachers’ association, Phyllis also made a generous donation to the St. Peter’s Foodbank in Marjorie’s honour.
The day’s joy was encapsulated in a family photograph, a snapshot of generations united by love and inspired by Marjorie’s example. Her radiant smile spoke volumes about her appreciation for the thoughtful tributes, the donations, and, most importantly, the presence of loved ones.
As the celebration drew to a close, Marjorie expressed heartfelt thanks to all who joined her for the unforgettable day.
In a community where Marjorie’s contributions have left an indelible mark, the event was not only a celebration of her remarkable life but also a reflection of the values she holds dear: connection, compassion, and community.
Through music, donations, and shared memories, Sampsonville came together to honour a century’s worth of love and legacy.
