ANTIGONISH: Residents will have a new place to take their four-legged friends.
During the regular meeting of Antigonish Town Council, elected representatives heard a staff report regarding a proposed dog park for the area. Council set aside $10,000 for the project and staff has selected a site behind the Club 60 building beside Columbus field.
Antigonish Mayor Laurie Boucher said a dog park is something residents have been asking about for some time, noting councillor William Cormier heard feedback about it during the run-up to the municipal election three years ago.
“We’ve had a number of requests and when councillor Cormier brought it up during his campaign, there was so much positive feedback that we knew as a council this was something that we would like to make happen,” she said.
The next step, said the mayor, is to get estimates on costs and get best practices in to see what the park will look like.
“You have to give it to staff, they’ve researched many different places,” said Boucher. “They didn’t let up on it. It took three years to get us to where we are now.”
Boucher said if estimates come back higher than the $10,000, there is nothing stopping them adding to that or allocating money from next year’s budget.
