LARRY’S RIVER: Small craft harbours play an important role in providing coastal communities and the commercial fishing industry with safe and accessible facilities.
With more than 76,000 Canadians employed in this sector, the Government of Canada is making investments that will continue to support the growth of this industry and provide economic opportunities for middle-class Canadians.
Cape-Breton Canso MP Rodger Cuzner announced on October 12 that the Government of Canada is investing $14.1 million this year in 12 small craft harbour improvement projects in northeast Nova Scotia. Six of these harbours will see their investment extend into future years for an additional $6 million.
Projects being carried out over the next two years include: constructing an extension to the inner basin side of Whitman’s wharf in Canso; carrying out major harbour improvements including a new wharf, floating wharves, service area and dredging in Little Dover; carrying out major harbour improvements including new wharves, floating wharves, service area and dredging in Havre Boucher; replacing the existing outer shell section of the wharf with a new structure in Larry’s River; completing a project to construct a containment cell and dredging the channel and basin in Little Habour in L’Ardoise; constructing a new breakwater, dredging the basin and installing new floating wharves in Murphy’s Pond; reconstructing the New Habour wharf; and dredging the channel and basin of Petit de Grat harbour.
“Coastal communities benefit from the employment opportunities achieved through small craft harbour investment,” Cuzner noted.
“Investments in harbour facilities across northeast Nova Scotia will ensure fish harvesters can operate safely and efficiently for years to come and will directly contribute to the Canadian economy.”
