ISLE MADAME: The Progressive Conservatives have a new face seeking election.
Isle Madame native Alana Paon became the PC candidate for the riding of Cape Breton-Richmond after being acclaimed on February 1.
A business consultant and farmer, Paon said she’s been interested in politics since her teens.
“In July, I was approached and gave it careful consideration,” she said. “I hope that by putting my name forward that I can help and be of service to the communities within Cape Breton-Richmond. After all, a politician is there to serve and listen to the people that elect them, not the other way around.”
She said her platform mirrors the PC Party’s platform, noting both emphasize the values of hard work and community.
“I want to hear and I want to receive input from everyone in the constituency,” she continued. “That’s the basis of my personal platform.”
As for goals and plans, Paon said she promises to represent all residents in the constituency. She said the area has been plagued with questions of integrity on the provincial and municipal levels and it is disheartening seeing the area dragged through the dirt.
“It’s time to change that,” she said. “As a Member of the Legislative Assembly, you are an elected representative of the people within your constituency. It is a privilege, not an entitlement.
“It’s our responsibility as elected officials to be able to reflect the needs and the voice of all of the people and not just some.”
When it comes to issues affecting both the riding and the province, she specifically pointed to outmigration, palliative care, doctor shortages, mental health issues, and education.
PC Leader Jamie Baillie stated he’s excited about Paon joining the team.
“Alana is the fresh face Cape Breton-Richmond needs in the House of Assembly,” Baillie said. “I have no doubt she will bring a high degree of integrity and common sense to the floor of the legislature. She will play a big role in the next Progressive Conservative government.”
In addition to working in business and agriculture, Paon has also been recognized for her leadership abilities.
