STRAIT AREA: It was double gold for the Strait Area Soccer Club on the weekend.
The club saw two teams – the U13 Girls and U15 Girls – pick up gold medals at the Soccer Nova Scotia Provincial Championships.
The U13 Girls traveled to the South Shore for their championship. The team lapped the field in the round robin. Strait picked up three wins, with scores of 4-2 over West Nova, 10-1 against Halifax City, and 5-0 against West Hants. That earned the Strait the top seed for the medal round.
The team capped off their weekend with a 3-0 win against East Hants in the gold medal game, with goals from Mallory MacPhee, Clare Glover, and Faith Samson. Emma David earned the shutout.
Closer to home, the U15 Girls were acting as hosts for their championships, which were held in Antigonish. Like the U13s, the team also picked up three wins in the round robin. They defeated Sackville 3-0, Cole Harbour Eastern Passage 6-0, and Northside 2-1.
Strait earned the gold medal with a 1-0 victory over Upper County (South Shore). Christine Ryan scored the winner, while Emma Foster kept a clean sheet.
The two championships are a significant accomplishment for the club. Prior to this weekend, the Strait had only won at provincials once before, when the 2010 U14 Girls team took home the gold.
This caps off a strong season for the club. After transitioning to the Highland League for the first time, they showed well across all age groups. The club also hosted a mini-program for players aged 3-10.
Over the course of the summer, more than 100 young players enjoyed the jamboree-style program.
