WHYCOCOMAGH: Inverness County District RCMP, along with Emergency Health Services (EHS), fire services, and LifeFlight, responded to a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 252 in the Churchview area of Whycocomagh.
Preliminary investigation determined that on July 15 at approximately 3:50 p.m., a motorcycle and an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), both travelling southbound, collided when the ATV began to slow down to make a turn.
The male driver of the motorcycle sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to hospital by EHS LifeFlight. The female driver of the ATV was also transported to hospital by ground ambulance. Both individuals were the sole occupants of their respective vehicles.
The roadway was closed for several hours while first responders attended the scene. An RCMP collision reconstructionist and members of Northeast Traffic Services are assisting with the ongoing investigation.
RCMP believe both drivers were wearing helmets at the time of the collision, which may have helped prevent more serious outcomes.
Police are reminding the public that all operators of motorcycles, ATVs, and off-highway vehicles should wear Department of Transportation-approved helmets to reduce the risk of serious injury or death.
