PORT HAWKESBURY: For the third time in its four-year history, the Be Like Breezie Soccer Tournament was won by the host SAERC Saints.
Coach Danny MacKinnon said he and the Senior Varsity Saints were very happy to take the win, facing the CEC (Junior Varsity) squad in the championship game. The final was 3-0.
“We almost had to play our own Juniors in the finals,” MacKinnon said, explaining round-robin ended with a three-way tie for second place. CEC had the fewest goals, so they got the championship berth.
The Saints JV team, coached by Travis Snow and Robin Morgan, beat CEC in round-robin, which MacKinnon cited as a major accomplishment. CEC is three-times larger than SAERC.
“We missed out last year,” MacKinnon said of the 2015 championship game, which was won by the Dalbrae Dragons. “We were bitter about getting a bronze last year, so this year we had to correct that.”
The Senior Varsity Saints were undefeated on the weekend, racking up scores of 4-0, 3-0, 6-0, 2-1, and the final being 3-0. Scoring in the championship game were Jasmine Meagher with two goals and Reanna Tower with a single. Charity Talbot had the shutout.
“They were short games, mind you, but that’s still a very good showing,” the coach said.
Regionals are coming up for both the Seniors and JV girls, so having good showings at the Be Like Breezie was great for both teams.
The tournament is named after Breanna Lundrigan, a former SAERC Saint who passed away on August 20, 2013, as a result of a car accident. She was the daughter of Ben and Karen Lundrigan of Mulgrave, and the sister of Brent and Scott. She was 17 at the time of the accident.
Members of the Lundrigan family attended the opening ceremony, and Ben spoke of how much he and the family appreciated SAERC hosting the event in his daughter’s honour.
