LOWER SOUTH RIVER: A local landmark is up for sale.

After running things for around 45 years, Don MacPherson is hoping someone new will step in and take over the Snow Queen Leisure World. MacPherson originally took over the business after a doctor and a pharmacist sold it to MacPherson’s mom.

“A few years later, I got it and they opened the Snow Queen in town,” he said.

“The Snow Queen in town was the first fast food restaurant there was [in the area].”

MacPherson decided to try and sell the Snow Queen, noting there is a sign at the road and he has involved Property Guys.

“Thanksgiving weekend will be my last weekend,” said MacPherson.

“That will be the end of it for me.”

MacPherson said he hopes an owner can be found for the business but even if not, this will be his last summer in charge.

“If I don’t sell it by spring or early summer of next year, then I will just sell all the assets off and sell the property for whatever its worth,” he said.

“I need some time for me. Every summer since I was 16 years old, I’ve been working here working at it or owned it. But I’ve made a made a decent living and I’ve had a lot of fun.”

MacPherson said he’s also met a lot of people along the way, noting one employee who retired a few years ago had worked for him for 35 years. He thanked all of his customers and employees, and urged them to pop in before September 4.

“People look at it and say ‘the highway changed, there’s no business anymore,’” he said.

“That’s not altogether true. Definitely sales are down but the fact is, if I was 25 years younger, I’d be putting signs up on the highway and directing people how to get here.”
