MULGRAVE: Mulgrave Town Council received support from a local business regarding a local road.

Last week, Mulgrave Mayor Ralph Hadley read a letter to Mulgrave Town Council from Strait of Canso Superport Corporation. Strait Superport sent the letter to Guysborough-Eastern Shore-Tracadie MLA and Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Lloyd Hines in support of the town’s wish to hand responsibility for upkeep on Route 344 to the province.

The road is the town’s responsibility at the moment and was a sticking point in the town’s drive for dissolution last year. The Municipality of the District of Guysborough listed the road as a reason it intended to contest the town’s dissolution application, which the town later rescinded in March, 2017.

“We’ve approached the minister on it before many, many times and that’s just a follow up,” said CAO Jim Davis. “It would make for a major change because if they changed it for us, they’d have to change it for everybody. That’s the problem. That’s why they won’t change it for us.”

Davis explained all towns with highways going through their limits have to pay for the cost of those sections whereas that is not the case for counties.
