Red Caps clinch first place in final game of season

PETIT DE GRAT: It took them all season to do it but, in the last game of the Richmond Amateur Baseball Association regular season, the Petit de Grat Red Caps slipped past the Little Anse Hawks for first place in the league.

The Red Caps used a 16-11 win last Thursday night over the Isle Madame Mariners to finish with a 13-6-1 record. The Hawks finished the season with an identical record, but the Red Caps won their head-to-head series, giving them top slot.

The game against the Mariners saw Red Cap ace David Paupin take the win as Mariner Callum Boudreau managed the loss. For the Red Caps, Maurice Boudreau was an offensive powerhouse, blasting out a grand slam home run, four RBIs, and four walks.

Now, the RABA post season will see the Hawks looking to clinch their fourth consecutive league title. Of course, both the Hawks and Red Caps will have some time on their hands before having to take to the field, as the two teams have garnered first round byes.

In terms of first round play, the third-place Mariners and sixth-place St. Peter’s Royals will battle in a best-of-three series. The fourth-place Inverness Athletics and fifth-place Port Hawkesbury Bucs will also play a best-of-three.

The first-place Red Caps will end up playing the lowest seeded remaining team after the first round of the playoffs. The Hawks will have the other team.

  In recent playoff action, both the Bucs and Mariners lead their series 1-0.

  The Bucs scored an 8-4 win last Sunday. On Monday, the Mariners won 6-5.

  August 15: Mariners @ St. Peter’s – 5:30 p.m.

  August 16: Royals @ Mariners (if needed) – 6 p.m.

  August 19: Inverness @ Bucs – 1 p.m.

  August 20: Bucs @ Inverness (if needed) – 1 p.m.
