PETIT DE GRAT: Former and current members of the Petit de Grat Red Caps and Little Anse Hawks are invited to take part in a very special event on Labour Day weekend.
“Both organizations are celebrating, and we thought we’d celebrate together,” said Warren Olsen of the Red Caps. “We’re rivals on the field, but we all live and work in the same area.”
The Red Caps are celebrating their 70th anniversary, and the Hawks are celebrating their 45th. The teams will be joining together for a weekend of celebration that offers a wine and cheese reception on Friday night and a Saturday night hot turkey dinner and dance at the Samson’s Cover Social Action Centre in Little Anse.
The venue of the Friday night reception is still to be determined, as the Red Caps are hoping to host the Intermediate A Provincials. If they win the bid, it’s a good bet the reception will take place at the Petit de Grat ball field, giving attendees a chance to watch some baseball while mingling.
“It’s a chance for people to get together, tell stories, and see people you haven’t seen in ages,” Olsen said, noting that several ball players have worn both jerseys over the years. “The joke we’re saying is that some guys are killing two birds with one stone.”
Rod Samson, one of the leaders with the Little Anse crew, said the anniversary weekend was a long time coming. He said he and some teammates were mulling over having a reunion when the team turned 40, but the plans didn’t materialize.
“This time, there’s a lot of help,” he said. “People are excited to sit down and tell some old war stories. We’ve had some battles over the years.
“There’ve been quite a few guys who’ve played on both teams. Some people have been lucky enough to win an RABA championship or go to provincials with both teams.”
Former (and current) Red Caps looking to attend should contact Olsen or his fellow Red Cap, Richard Boudreau. Players looking to attend from the Hawks can contact Samson or his teammate Laurier Samson.
The anniversary weekend has a Facebook page. The easiest way to find it is by logging onto Facebook and entering “Red Caps 70th And Hawks 45th Anniversary Weekend.”
