Jabba the Hut

I was going to write a column comparing world politics to Star Wars. Why? I like Star Wars and I dislike politics and I thought the two would provide interesting column fodder. I got about halfway though it in my head but couldn’t make it funny. It just came out sad.

(This is a spoiler alert. If you haven’t seen the original trilogy, first of all I am sorry for you and also you may want to go watch them real quick because you will have no idea what I am going to write about. Cool? Excellent.)

The plan was to compare the U.S. to Anakin Skywalker, the young Jedi who becomes Darth Vader. Britain would be Obi wan and Canada would be… well the homer in me wants it to be Luke Skywalker but it’s most likely Wedge. Luke… I have to say Luke is likely France, Han is Ireland, and Lando is Australia.

However, I stopped when I got to Jabba the Hut because all I could do was compare Jabba to both Donald Trump and Harvey Weinstein. Obviously, Weinstein has absolutely nothing to do with international politics, save for his Democratic fundraising efforts, but the recent allegations of assault and harassment reminded me of everyone’s favourite frog-eating gangster, particularly the bit with him having Leia on a leash and in a bikini.

Weinstein helped put two of my favourite filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith, on the Hollywood map. Apparently, Weinstein received more thank-yous from Oscar winners than God and follows only the likes of Steven Spielberg when it comes to power within the movie industry. He’s a big deal.

However, that big deal faces a litany of accusations from a lot of women and if I have to guess, I think criminal charges are on the way. As to whether or not the charges will stick, who knows? If these accusations are true, Weinstein seems to have gotten away with a lot for a long time. As rich and powerful as he is, I highly doubt he will face any jail time… which says a lot about the justice system and really the system which allowed him to continue doing whatever it is he did since the 1980s. Is it the patriarchy or rape culture? I don’t know.

I do know this nonsense has to stop at some point but I have little to no clue how. I don’t really know what else to say about the matter but if the allegations are true, I hope he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and I hope people try to remain calm when it comes to not judging the accusers.

To close things off, I am on vacation right now and looking to go back to my old standby of watching and then bagging on a movie. I have no idea what movie I will be insulting but I have a few in mind. If you have suggestions for what movie I should use, please feel free to share. I mean, please don’t share with me but you know… someone. I hear good things about this “sharing” thing so you may want to give it a try.

I’m done now.
