ANTIGONISH: The province’s municipal affairs department is looking into best practices for a local arena commission.
Following a regular monthly meeting of council for the Municipality of the County of Antigonish, Warden Russell Boucher said one of the topics at a recent joint council meeting with the Town of Antigonish was the Antigonish Arena Commission.
“We have Municipal Affairs looking into the governance of the arena commission,” said Boucher. “They’ve gone out to three or four other municipal units where the same scenario is happening or has happened to get the best value as to how we can approach our governance.”
Boucher, who now serves as chair of the arena commission, said the councils are waiting to hear back from municipal affairs.
County clerk-treasurer Glen Horne said council passed a resolution last summer to review the commission. Based on workloads for both the town and the county, which jointly own the arena, council asked the department to lend some assistance through the use of an analyst. The councils asked for examples of best practices and information for further consideration.
“We just wanted to have lots of nuts and bolts in it and the proper nuts and bolts so that when we do reconvene, that we do so under the right governance model,” Boucher added.
