ANTIGONISH: Antigonish Warden Owen McCarron said council for the Municipality of the County of Antigonish continues to look at cell service and high speed Internet as issues for the area, calling them “huge gaps in our county.”
“We’re continuing to push that and every opportunity we get to talk… whether it’s our local MLAs, our MPs, it’s important that we emphasize the need for strong Internet and cell service.”
McCarron said a lot of rural businesses in the county require high speed and reliable cell coverage, as well as the safety aspects of having those services.
“We’re pushing it and we’re having some success,” he said. “We’re getting some positive feedback. We’re hopeful that the federal government is going to roll out a program and we’d like to be part of that. We’ll just have to wait and see what that looks like when it gets rolled out.”
McCarron said people continue to call and ask if council is still looking at the issue.
“There is still a huge portion of our county that’s under serviced with slow or no service,” said the warden. “Everyone wants faster speeds because today’s technology requires more bandwidth.”
There have been a number of complaints to council over the years from residents in various districts about the various safety concerns that come with poor cell service.
