PORT HOOD: Coastal erosion is doing no favours to a section of Inverness beach near to the place that, years ago, the community dumped its garbage.

Councillor Jim Mustard said the area between Beach Village and the end of the boardwalk is having some problems with material from the dump being unearthed and landing on the beach.

He brought up the matter last Thursday at Inverness Council’s committee-of-the-whole.

“Maybe, as a municipality, we can have a conversation with the province or the federal government about what’s the best way for us to proceed,” Mustard said. “Could we stabilize it? It’s going to be an ongoing issue if that goes in the water and people are swimming there.

“Maybe there’s a way of going 20 feet back into it and stabilize it.”

Warden Betty Ann MacQuarrie noted Nova Scotia Environment might be in a position to give assistance, as coastal erosion would seem to fall under that agency’s mandate.

“It might be something as simple as have crews go on there on four-wheelers and clean up in the springtime, but we’d need clearance from the federal or provincial government to do so,” Mustard said.

Council is planning to address the matter at next month’s regular meeting in January.
