Cape Breton West splits with Dartmouth

PORT HOOD: Two of the three best Major Midget teams in the province met for a pair of games last weekend at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre. The result was a weekend split for the Cape Breton West Islanders (9-4) and Dartmouth’s Steele Subaru Major Midgets (10-2-1).

Due to a three-goal third period on Saturday night, the Islanders managed a 5-3 win. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of the first and 2-2 at the end of 40 minutes.

Both Stephen Fox and Calum MacPherson were at the top of their game, with two goals and an assist each. Fox has the distinction of leading league scoring in two catagories, total points (24 points in 13 games) and goals (15). Chase Ellis had three helpers, and Sean Stewart also scored. Managing helpers were Fearghus MacDonadl, Neil MacLean, Liam MacKinnon, Jack Morris, and Ben MacLellan.

Ewan MacDonald faced 33 shots. The Islanders were edged in shots, as Dartmouth’s Stewart Bagnell faced 30 pucks.

On Sunday, the Islanders were slightly outshot once again (40-36) but more importantly outscored in all three periods as Dartmouth managed an 8-4 win.

This time along, Fox (two goals), Matthew Raike (a goal and an assist), and Dell Welton (two assists) all led the Islander scoring. MacPherson had a goal, and playing set-up men were MacDonald, Morris, Sam Grant, and Liam MacKinnon.

Goalie Ryan Miller took the loss for the Islanders.

The weekend results left Dartmouth in second place and the Islanders in third. The Halifax McDoanlds (11-1) sit in first place.

On Saturday night, the Islanders are off to Halifax to face the league leaders.
