Small distillery making a big impression

ARISAIG: A local spirit maker continues to receive recognition.
Thomas Steinhart, owner of Arisaig’s Steinhart Distillery, said his habanero vodka and maple vodka each won a gold medal in at the New York Wine and Spirits Competition in late August. The Steinhart Distillery’s gin also took home silver.
When asked what he thought of the medals, Steinhart said “they tell me what I think I know, that my stuff is good.”
The two golds were added to the gold and silver medals Steinhart won in the Spring at the San Francisco World Sprits Competition.
This month marks the second anniversary of the distillery. In those two years, Steinhart managed to make spirits held in high regard in North America and Europe.
His was also the first Canadian distillery invited to join the British Gin Guild.
“Gin is one of those things you either really like or you really don’t,” explained Steinhart.
“In a regular spirit competition, it’s hard to get something really good with gin but I’m very confident the next year at the World Gin Competition all judges will be gin lovers so I’m sure I’ll win something better than silver.”
Steinhart Distillery also received the Emerging Business Award from the Antigonish Chamber of Commerce in late October.
